Position summary

The Travel Alberta Summer Student, Legal, supports Travel Alberta’s Corporate Counsel in our Calgary office. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to be involved with a broad range of legal matters, including corporate, commercial, marketing and advertising, intellectual property, privacy labour and employment law.  

Additionally, the incumbent will have the opportunity to assist on legal aspects of projects throughout the organization, including marketing, destination and economic development, and corporate operations/ business operations. What you need

• Currently enrolled in a Faculty of Law program and have completed their 2nd year in that program prior to the start of the work term 
• Self-identify as Indigenous/ First Nations/ Inuit/ Metis 
• Legally entitled to work in Canada by way of Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, or a valid work permit 
• Proficient in MS Office suite  
• Excellent written and oral communication skills along with legal research and writing experience 
• Ability to solve problems that are both routine and non-routine in nature 
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills 
• Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to be resourceful and work independently   
• Works efficiently in a collaborative team environment  
• Independent, self-motivated and highly organized  
• Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism, integrity and confidentiality  
• Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced and results driven environment

What you’ll do

Legal Research and Analysis:

Provide general support within the Legal group which could include assistance in the areas of corporate, commercial, marketing and advertising, intellectual property, privacy, labour and employment law, in particular through:  

• Research and analysis of legal issues 
• Interacting, liaising, and communicating with internal business units and external partners, shareholders and stakeholders 
• Drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts, waivers and license agreements 
• Drafting, interpreting and revising policies and procedures  
• Reviewing and interpreting legislation and related documentation

This position is based in Calgary, Alberta.

Employment status: Summer student, Full-time

Salary: $24-27/ hour
