Job Summary:
The Farm Assistant reports to the Crop Production Supervisor and the Market Manager. The Assistant works to ensure the Urban Farm has adequate volume and variety of crops available for weekly sales. The work varies from week to week and can be physically demanding—a combination of walking, bending, standing for long periods of time, lifting, and repetitive activities. This role benefits from attention to detail and being organized, methodical, and precise in the day-to-day tasks, observations, and communications.
NOTE: This position is provided in partnership with Agriculture Canada Youth Employment Skills Program, Youth Facing Barriers. Eligible applicants MUST:
- Be between 16 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
- Be Indigenous, a visible minority, a recent immigrant (within 5 years), living in a low-income household, living with a diagnosed mental health disability, a single parent, an early school leaver.
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment;
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment;
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada
International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
Your Role:
Archway’s Farm Assistant with the Urban Farm contributes by:
- Assisting with the overall crop production including seeding, bed prep, compost production, transplanting, weeding, fertilizer applications, harvesting and preparation of produce for market.
- Coordinating with the Crop Production Supervisor for daily & weekly schedule of activities.
- Mowing grass and maintaining the Urban Farm site.
- Assisting with education programs for residents & school kids in the Abbottsford/ Mission areas.
- Assisting the Urban Farm Community Coordinator with events as required.
- Engaging with customers at the local Farmers Market and other events, providing product knowledge and accepting payment (card, cash).
- Assisting in representing Archway Urban Farm at community education events.
- Attending and participating in program meetings, and in all mandatory agency trainings.
- Reviewing crop health, production and operations with senior management and mentors.
- Following strict food safety and health & safety rules and regulations.
- Performing other duties such as building projects as assigned by the Farm Manager and Crop Supervisor.

Getting an Interview – You will be considered if you have:
- Enrollment and are working towards a high school or post-secondary school diploma or degree.
- One year experience in a customer service position is an asset.
- Experience with gardening, garden equipment, usage of garden machinery and material is an asset.
- Experience working with children is an asset.
The Job Requires you to have:
- Transportation to and from work and Farm and events.
- A Valid BC driver’s license with a clean driving record is a condition of employment.
- Ability for physical labour related to garden maintenance and crop production, such as periods of constant motion including walking, repetitive tasks, lifting, bending, and long periods of standing.
- Physical ability to lift between 20-30 lbs.
- Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
- Involvement in high-level social interaction and engagement, requiring adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols.
- Up-to-date Tetanus vaccine is strongly recommended.
- A satisfactory Criminal Records Check is a condition of employment.
