To be eligible to apply for an intern position, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • In possession of a Social Insurance Number at time of hire.
  • You have graduated or will graduate with a recognized post-secondary degree or diploma, post-graduate certificate or diploma between January 2023 and June 2024.

As part of the Government Relations team and working closely with the Indigenous Relations Advisor, this role will support the Region’s work to advance Reconciliation and Indigenous Relationship Building Initiatives.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and provide analysis on various municipal, Provincial, Federal and Indigenous advocacy and priority issues
  • Coordinate, research and prepare briefing notes, jurisdictional scans and resource material
  • Support awareness raising and capacity building across the organization through the coordination, development and implementation of internal training materials and events 
  • Support relationship building initiatives with First Nations, Inuit, Métis communities and community partners 
  • Review and summarize relevant Indigenous research and reports 
  • Other duties as required
     

Skills & Qualifications

Essential

  • Self-identify as an Indigenous person such as First Nations/Inuit/Métis and have lived experience as part of an Indigenous community. Applicants are encouraged to reflect upon how their lived experience with Indigenous communities would contribute to this role and Halton Region
  • Deep knowledge of Indigenous culture and an understanding of Halton’s local Indigenous communities
  • A strong understanding of Indigenous culture, history, and communities
  • Knowledge of Indigenous research practices
  • Strong research, written and oral communication, organizational and analytical skills
  • Strong time management skills 
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others to problem solve
  • An interest in learning about government structure, including those of various levels of government, and public administration
  • A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office


Preferred

  • A reference letter from an Indigenous community and/or Indigenous non-profit organization (Please submit with your application)
  • Knowledge of an Indigenous language
  • A university degree in Indigenous studies, social sciences, public or business administration, public policy or equivalent
